Sizing a driveway gate

Start with the widest thing that has to come through: a truck with a boat trailer, a mower trailer, an RV. Double drive gates usually run 10 to 16 feet; a single swing gate works on narrower openings. Leave room to turn in, especially off an alley or a narrow road.

A driveway gate puts a lot of leverage on its hinge post, and Florida's sandy soil and wet seasons make that worse. The gate is only as good as its posts, which is why we overbuild them to the Saltline standard.
