The most private styles

- Wood traditional privacy: closely spaced vertical boards. Wood fencing
- Vinyl privacy: solid panels with a clean, finished look and no staining. Vinyl fencing
- Shadowbox (wood or vinyl): alternating boards that look finished from both sides while keeping privacy and airflow. Shadowbox
- Chain link with privacy slats: slats woven through the mesh. Chain link
Height and rules
Most backyard privacy fences are 6 feet tall, but the maximum height depends on your city or county code and your HOA, and front-yard fences are usually limited to lower heights. Check our HOA fence guide and fence permits page before you plan.
Privacy and wind
Solid privacy panels catch more wind than open styles. In exposed coastal spots, semi-privacy or shadowbox lets some air through while still blocking most of the view, and strong posts matter most whatever you choose.
