Pool Fences in Florida

Safe pool. Open view.

Ornamental aluminum and vinyl pool fences with self-closing, self-latching gates, built for homes across the Gulf Coast. Here's what Florida's pool barrier rules ask for.

Florida pool barrier rules, in plain English

Florida's Residential Swimming Pool Safety Act, Chapter 515 of the Florida Statutes, requires new residential pools to have at least one approved safety feature, and a pool barrier is the most common. The detailed construction rules are in the Florida Building Code, Residential, Chapter 45 (Section R4501.17). Your local building department enforces them and inspects the fence.

This is a summary, not legal advice. The building official for your city or county has the final say, so confirm the details with them when you pull the permit.

  • The barrier must be at least 4 feet high, measured on the outside.
  • No gaps or openings a young child could crawl under, squeeze through or climb over.
  • Gates open outward, away from the pool, and are self-closing and self-latching, with the latch release out of a child's reach.
  • A wall of the house only counts as part of the barrier if it has no door or window opening onto the pool (or those doors and windows have the required alarms or self-closing devices).
  • Nothing should sit next to the barrier that a child could use to climb it.

Which fence makes the best pool barrier?

Ornamental aluminum is the most popular pool fence in Florida: it's open, so you can see the pool from the house and the yard, it doesn't rust, and pool-style aluminum is made with tight picket spacing. See our ornamental aluminum fencing styles, including our Pool Fence style.

Vinyl privacy also works when you want the pool area closed in from the neighbors, as long as the barrier height, gaps and gates meet the rules. Chain link can work too, but the mesh size matters for climbability, so it's less common around pools.

Pool gates

Gates are the part of a pool barrier that needs the most attention. Every gate in the barrier, including side-yard walk gates that open into the pool area, needs to swing away from the pool and close and latch on its own. We build gates to match the fence and to work the way the rules require.

How tall does a pool fence have to be in Florida?

At least 4 feet, measured on the outside of the barrier, under Florida Statutes s. 515.29. Your local building department confirms the details at inspection.

Can my backyard privacy fence be my pool barrier?

It can, if the whole perimeter meets the barrier rules: height, no climbable gaps, and self-closing, self-latching gates that open away from the pool.

Do I need a permit for a pool fence?

In most Florida jurisdictions, yes. Pool barriers are inspected. See our fence permits page for your county's building department.

Is aluminum or vinyl better for a pool fence?

Aluminum if you want to see the pool and keep the view; vinyl if you want privacy around the pool deck.
